Bihar Assembly , landmark of iconic building decked up for centenary celebrations

Patna: Bihar Assembly building, an iconic and unique building has been decked up for the centenary celebrations to be addressed by the 
President Ram Nath Kovind  who arrived Patna on Wednesday on three days tour.


The  building designed by A M Millwood in a "free Renaissance style" is unique because of its architectural marvels.
The design , its architecture and carvings on the walls and pillars of the building are influenced by the ancient Roman style.

The semicircular main assembly hall of the Vidhan Sabha has 60 feet long and 50 feet wide internal structure.

Currently 243 members use the hall during the session of the house which had a strength of 331 members in 1952 which increased to 342 in 1977. Following reorganisation of Bihar in 2000 and bifurcation of Jharkhand the strength was reduced to 243.

Initially the building was known as Council Chamber.

Following formal opening of the building by then state Governor Lord S P Sinha, the inaugural session of Bihar and Orissa Provincial Legislative Council was held in the building on February 7, 1921.

 After setting up of the Bihar and Orisa  Provincial Legislative Council, its first meeting was held in the Seminar Hall of the Patna College on January 20, 1913. 

It may be recalled that the province of Bihar and Orissa came into being on March 22, 1912. 

 A M Millwood had also designed the Council Chamber in a free Renaissance style which was  completed in 1920, according to 1924 edition of the Bihar and Orissa District Gazetteers - Patna, authored by LSS OMalley.

The first joint session of the two houses took place on July 22, 1937 in the building after formation of Bihar Legislative Assembly. On 20 July 1937, the first government was formed under the leadership of Dr. Shri Krishna Singh.
On 25 July 1937 Ram Dayalu Singh was elected as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. 

President Ram Nath Kovind will address the centenary celebrations of Bihar Legislative Assembly building on October 21.He would also plant baby plant of Bodhi tree and would lay the foundation stone of centenary year pillar in the state legislative assembly premises.
