New Delhi: Strongly opposing the Delhi University (DU) notification no Estab-T/workload/2022/1883, for determining the workload in the university departments the
Academics for Action and Development Teachers Association (AADTA) demanded its immediate withdrawal.
National In-charge of AADTA Aditya Narayan Misra alleged that this is absolutely quantitative and yes-boss i.e. UGC-MoE approach to teaching-learning in the departments disregarding the quality and the specialised needs.
He expressed doubts over the hurriedness of the administration for imposing the decision even after the meeting of Education Council (EC) Members and Academic Council (AC) Members was already scheduled to discuss the notification in detail.
Mr. Misra said that it is essential to go through the notification with impending 1-year PG Programme and UGC Regulations 2022 for Ph D. He alleged that the sole of the administration was to drastically reduce the number of teachers and appoint more and more teachers on the contractual basis.
The departments with Post-graduate teaching and doctoral research have specific needs which cannot be quantified and regimented. In its glorious evolution of a hundred years, DU evolved such norms and conventions which brought academic rigour and excellence recognised globally.
According to him staraitjacketing in the name of blind imposition of UGC Regulations 2018 is not a solution. The Ph D and PG project supervision is as important as class room teaching and cannot be kept out of the direct teaching. He said that they are not extra-curricular activity and need lots of preparation from the faculties. The Professors in the departments have to spend lots of time in selection committees across the universities and various committees of the universities, the state and the national governments and the international Organisations. The specialisation of the papers and courses and needs of smaller departments cannot be buried to cost cutting measures on the behest of MoE.
Mr Misra said that UGC Regulations 2022 has also provided for the online courses under the course work. It also allows adjunct Faculty to be co-supervisor. It will not only reduce the teaching jobs but also the quality research work, he quipped demanding immediate withdrawal of the notification.
