Higher education in India being pushed in dark tunnel at the behest of UGC-MoE
New Delhi: Strongly opposing the university notification for sizes of classrooms, practicals and tutorials for both UG and PG Action and Development Teachers Association (AADTA) alleged that the higher education in India was being pushed in the dark tunnel at the behest of UGC-MoE.
Retorting sharply at the notifications issued by the Delhi University (DU), the National In-charge of AADTA Aditya Narayan Misra said that the latest notification regarding size of the classrooms is sequel of the earlier notification of the DU determining workloads in the departments, UGC REGULATIONS 2022 for Ph D and drastic fund cut on research, libraries and laboratories. He said these notifications clearly indicate that the higher education in India being pushed in the dark tunnel at the behest of UGC-MoE.
Outlining the constraints the teachers and students were facing in DU, he said that the practical size has been doubled from 15 and 30 and number of equipments have been very few (many of them may be having maintenance problems) due to severe fund crunch. The tutorial size has increased around 300 percent which appears to be like a classroom, he said adding that this will severely compromise with the quality of education.
"The notification is also to reduce the requirements of teachers, which will have the cumulative effect on quality of education", Mr Misra said adding that thousands of teachers working on adhoc and temporary basis in DU too have shown their resistance to the notification. He reiterated the demands of AADTA for absorption of adhoc and temporary teachers.
These notifications have bypassed the statutory bodies including Education Council (EC) and Academic Council (AC), he said adding that AADTA strongly demanded for withdrawal of the notification and ensure that there should not be any change in the existing norms of classroom, tutorial and practical size.
Instead of fulfilling the promises made in 5th December letter of MHRD for releasing the additional posts in lieu of EWS expansion, these notifications were taking away the additional posts to be given under the second tranche of OBC expansion and EWS expansion. AADTA demanded that those posts must be released without any further delay.
