New Delhi : Former  JNU students union president and  youth icon of Communist Party of India ( CPI)   Kanhaiya Kumar today  formally  joined Congress party in presence of Rahul Gandhi at the  All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi  and said that Congress party was like a big ship and  if its saved,  aspirations  of many people Mahatma Gandhis oneness, Bhagat Singhs courage, and BR Ambedkars idea of equality will be protected.  

He  said that he has joined the Congress  to  protect the  expectations of the people.

Describing Congress as the oldest and the most democratic party of the country, he said that  this country cant be saved, if the Congress cant be saved.

He claimed that "crores of youngsters" feel the same way that the country "cant be saved without saving the Congress".

Mr Kumar further said that Congress was not just a party, but was  an idea. Its the countrys oldest and most democratic party.

Without talking the name of any political party Mr Kumar said  a particular ideology was trying to ruin Indias values, culture, history, and future.

Gujarat Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani  cold not join the party due to technical reasons but   extended his support to the outfit.

Mr Kumar  after joining CPI ahead of the 2019 general election had unsuccessfully contested from his hometown Begusarai in Bihar against the BJPs Giriraj Singh of the BJP .

Mr Kumar was jailed over alleged "anti-national slogans" raised at an event in 2016 to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru.
