‘JESUS’ Premieres for Inclusive Audiences in New Delhi

New Delhi: India is set to make history with the release of its first feature film created specifically for the Deaf community. JESUS: a Deaf Missions Film, based on the life of Jesus Christ, is unique for being entirely produced by Deaf filmmakers and featuring an all-Deaf cast. Dialogues are in sign language, and the film has been adapted for Indian audiences with Indian Sign Language (ISL) interpretation and Hindi voiceovers.
The screening of the film was held in Delhi  on August 24.

Premiere in New Delhi

The film premiered in New Delhi, attended by over 250 Deaf individuals and government officials. It will be screened in 35 additional cities. Director and CEO of Deaf Missions Joseph D. Josselyn said, “This film allows the Indian Deaf community to experience the story of Jesus without language barriers, connecting to it in their heart language.” Gideon Firl, who plays Jesus, added, “India holds a special place in my heart, and sharing this story with the Deaf community here is an honor.”

Social Impact and Partnership

Deaf Missions, an international organization creating faith-based media for the Deaf, partnered with Mumbai-based India Signing Hands (ISH News) to bring this project to India. ISH founder and CEO Alok Kejriwal said, “Every film should be accessible to all. We’ve brought Little Krishna to Deaf audiences and are now proud to present Jesus Christ’s story.”

This release is significant as millions of Deaf individuals in India face barriers to entertainment and religious content. The film includes picture-in-picture ISL interpretation and a soundtrack for a richer experience.
