Punjab, Sept 18( TVN) Amid power tussle and factionalism in Punjab Unit of Congress party ahead if the assembly elections , Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh resigned on Saturday from his post.
Capt. Singh called on Punjab governor Banwari Lal Purohit and submitted his resignation as .
Later while interacting with media, he said that he had informed Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the morning about tendering his resignation from the post of CM. He said that party apparently lacked confidence that he could not run the government which he said was humiliating for him.
Capt. Singh saud that he continues to be a part of the Congress party but would decide his future strategy in consultation with his supporters.
The development comes just four months ahead of assembly elections in Punjab.
When the tussle escalated in Punjab, the party tried to purge it off by appointing Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Congress chief . The tussle and factionalism however continued in the party resulting 8nto the resignation of Capt Singh who was inducted as 26th CM of Punjab in 2017 after Congress won the assembly elections with the majority.
Mr Singh was who Captain during the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War, had served as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee from 2010 to 2013.
He had been five terms MLA in Punjab Assembly . Mr Singh had resigned from Lok Sabha on November 23, 2016, and fully dedicated himself to Punjab polls following which the party came in power with a majority.
